April & March highlights
With deepest sympathy to GN for her hubby JP who died from cancer on Sunday. They had been married 11 years and he was 59 years old. Cherish your loved ones every moment and consider making a donation to Hospice Austin or the American Cancer Society.
And now, the fluffy recap:
Today (April 3): Goodwill at 183 and Anderson Mill is still awesome! Plus, from now until mid-April you can support your local store and donate to assist workers with jobs training and other endeavors. Bought a sectional sofa today in great shape for only $75! It's a Bassett and very practical. Vintage 1990s. :0) This purchase and the Enterprise cargo-van rental only set us back $140!
April 1: We won the $500 million lottery! Actually, cheers to winning MegaMillions peeps in Kansas, Maryland, and Illinois. Unfortunately, the Maryland fortune may become a clustermcfuck due to one woman claiming the jackpot alone (allegedly swimming away from her coworker ticket pool at McD's) and that's no April Fool.
March 24: First Annual "Blessing of the Rides" classic car show at Top Notch on Burnet. Lots 'o cars, dogs, and retro rockabilly! We had a dang good time thanks to Jeff and Jill for the invite and chance to see Mandy Marie and the Cool Hand Lukes on Myspace and Facebook rock the lot and bless the rides! Here are my iPhone photos and videos (forgive the quality) plus the official postcard (above left) which was on all the tables inside the restaurant:
March 18: Chon Som on Wells Branch closes. Waaaa! Follow them on Facebook for updates since they may reopen in the future and/or venture into catering when their kiddos get a bit older.
Early March: Scenes from South by Southwest 2012 - These photos are kinda lame and don't do the crowds justice but hey..check out this ginormous LED monitor at 4th and Congress in the Frank parking lot!
Although you can't tell in this video, behind the decadent display is a basketball and exercise court along with skateboard ramps and pipes for tricky and blacklit action at night.
All over. Taken on Monday morning around 7:30 am. Buh-bye LED! We knew ye well!
Taken on the way to train in front of the Mariott. I think that's a Bentley convertible. Love!
The poser van (not really) but it's my secret nickname for this vehicle since it was parked almost every afternoon in front of the FedEx at 4th and Congress (seemingly for no particular reason) all during the fest. Makes me want to buy this sticker and put it on my car, too!
It's the 5:30 train! Last stop: Leander, TX from downtown.
It's mini-Chicago in Austin, TX during SxSW! You never normally see this many people downtown at rush hour (cars, yes, but not quite so many people.)
It's the outdoor LED screen and Nike court. This photo does not do justice to it's techno glory!
Preview of coming attractions at 4th and Congress (on 4th in front of the former Spaghetti Warehouse which closed in late 2011 since this historic building and former train station could be put on sale for $4.5 million.) Sigh. The inside has been completed gutted except for the original hardwood floors which now look more like acetone-soaked nail polish. Very very sad. Even the indoor loft is gone but the upstairs and outdoor bar remains. Wonder what happened to the full-size trolley car inside? One fond memory is going there with my folks' as a kid (about age 5 - circa 1977) and playing with their antique crane game. Put in a penny and try to win a plastic-bubble encased trinket since this was a hand crank game that someone could actually win unlike today's computer cranes that grabs an item with as much force as a creepy limp handshake.
There were HUNDREDS of pedicabs. Took this shot walking to 5:30 train at 4th and Congress on way home from work.
WTF? It's $20-$30 to park when "normal" rates downtown are $5-$7 all day. Whose town is this, anyway?
5:30 train to Leander. No, the line is never this long on a regular commuter day (at least not yet).
I love the opening themesong in Workaholics with the Tubbuddy frog in the toilet. Don't you remember Tubbuddies by Tomy? You wind them up and stick them in the water to watch them swim. It's straight outta Mordor!!!!
